Why Red?

Writer's picture: Cameron TruemanCameron Trueman

After a quick Google search I am still unsatisfied. Why are so many wood/canvas canoes painted red? Personally, I love the colour as it rattles something deep in my unconscious. When I see a red canoe I feel an instant connection, like I know there is an adventure about to happen. I see other red canoes being portaged or paddles and I feel envious. Red=Jealous

Canadian canoeist and film maker Bill Mason paddled a red wood canvas canoe in his Path of the Paddle series. It was the spirit of that video series that I fancied myself paddling quaint rivers exploring beautiful Canadian landscapes. I wonder if this was the premise behind the red canoe- to evoke a feeling? Did the early canoe companies want us to feel the call of the wild so we would buy their wares?
